Cleaning urine stains from a mattresses

Yes, I know, what a title ‘cleaning urine stains from a mattresses’, but I just had to share with you this awesome how to tip from Katie Berry over at Housewife How-To’s® on how to clean a mattress.

We had a wee little accident the other night and only realised the next morning we had urine stains on the mattress, not just from the previous night, but there appeared to be a few extra ones there as well and I had no idea how to clean them.

After a bit of a Google search I came across Katie’s article containing a cleaning recipe for getting urine stains out of a mattress.

Katie, you’re a life saver, well mattress saver, but hey, totally stoked, it worked a treat!

Urine stains are very difficult but not impossible to get out once they’re dry, but this two-step method helped dramatically when my kids were little. First, dissolve 3 tbsp. baking soda in 8 oz. of hydrogen peroxide then add a drop or two of liquid dish soap. Dab this solution on to the spot. (Do NOT drench your mattress!) If the stain persists, wait until the mattress is dry then whisk together 3 tablespoons dry laundry detergent powder (NOT Oxiclean or anything containing oxygenated bleach) and 1 tablespoon water to make a dry foam. Lightly spread this on the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes. Scrape away any residue and vacuum well.
